Bed Bugs
At Eco-Friendly Pest Control, we're very experienced with Bed Bugs… it's now the most common call we get in Sioux Falls. Although rare in most of South Dakota for decades, the bed bug has made a comeback throughout the U.S. We've all heard recent stories like the airline or 5 star hotel with bed bugs. The increase of international travel is the leading cause of the problem in the U.S.- according the C.D.C. (the U.S Centers of Disease Control)

Bed bugs can live in any area of the home and can reside in tiny cracks in furniture as well as on textiles and upholstered furniture. They tend to be most common in areas where people sleep and generally concentrate in beds, including mattresses, box springs, and bed frames. Other sites where bed bugs often reside include curtains, edges of carpet, corners inside dressers and other furniture, cracks in wallpaper (particularly near the bed), and inside the spaces of wicker furniture.

We also provide mattress protection – Bed Bug mattress Encasement Bags – to prevent spreading and re-infestation.
Because cockroaches contaminate food with their excrement and secrete an unpleasant odor which can permeate the indoor environment, these insects are considered by most homeowners and entomologists to be one of the worst household pests.
A single female roach may produce hundreds of egg capsules that carry up to thirty baby roaches each. When it hatches they begin the cycle over and within months start to reproduce themselves.
Like termites, some roach species can digest wood. Many species inhabit ant, wasp, termite colony nests, caves and rodent or animal burrows.
Larger species of roaches may move from outside to inside your home. So, our service also includes an outside perimeter shield to guard against a major roach infestation.

Ants are one of the biggest pest problems in South Dakota every summer. If you've tried and failed to end this cycle, it's not your fault. Most methods available for consumer use simply don't have a way to travel back to the nest.
To keep ants under control, here are some things you should know to prevent repeated infestations:
  • Entry: Ants can enter through even the tiniest cracks, seeking water and sweet or greasy food substances.
  • Scent trails: Ants leave an invisible chemical trail of pheromones for others to follow.
  • Nest locations: Ants can nest about anywhere; in lawns, walls, stumps, even under foundations.
  • Colony size: Can number up to to 500,000 and can uproot and relocate quickly when threatened.
  • Colony Lifetime: Worker ants may live seven years and the queen may live as long as 15 years.

Ear Wigs
Despite what you may have seen in sci-fi movies, Ear Wigs don't crawl into people's ears at night to nest! They are no threat to people, though they can use their pincers in defense and will emit a foul-smelling liquid when disturbed. The threat they pose is property damage - due to the Ear Wig's adaptability to devour most anything.
In South Dakota Ear Wigs are usually an outside pest, feeding on garden plants and moist wood. However, you'll find them inside your home during winter or when conditions provide a moist, dark hiding place.
Ear Wigs have are reddish in color with a slender flattened body, bead-like antennae and are easily recognized by their large pincers at the tip of the abdomen. Winged species are often attracted to light at night. Most are non-native but continue to be a common problem because the Ear Wig travels well hidden in cargo; especially wood products.

Wasps, Ticks and Biting Insects
In South Dakota livestock and agriculture often attract biting flies, bees and wasps. Although not regarded as a major cause of property damage like other insects. A stinging insect can be a threat to the health and safety to people and animals. Some people are able to withstand many stings at once, while others with an allergic reaction cannot handle even one.
The mosquito, the most common and annoying of all this group, can carry West Nile disease and is a threat to both humans and livestock in rural South Dakota. However, thanks to city-wide spraying in Sioux Falls and other communities, the mosquito is not much of a problem of city residents. However, we do provide abatement spraying for neighborhoods and rural properties that don't benefit from government spraying programs.

Spiders, Squirrels & Birds
Although common and a part of our mid west heritage, the mischievous reputation of these South Dakota natives stops being funny when they're no longer good neighbors. At Eco-Friendly Pest Control, we have years of trapping experience and the live traps needed.
In many instances the nesting of birds, bats and small mammals creates a sanitary and health issue that can have serious impact on your business or family home. We've often called to solve these problems - such as the installation of anti-perching devices for pigeons or the disposal of disease-spreading bat guano!
With these animals - squirrels, birds, etc. - and even the harmless reptiles in our region, it's our goal to encourage them to re-locate! Or, if needed, we'll capture these critters and move them to unpopulated rural areas without further human interference.
